Sawgrass Doesn't Have One Restaurant Scene. It Has Two, Split by A1A.

Ask someone who just moved into Sawgrass where to eat tonight and you'll watch them hesitate. Not because there's nothing nearby. Because there's too much, and it doesn't sit together the way a single neighborhood's dining scene usually does. That hesitation is the tell. Sawgrass isn't one restaurant district with a lot of variety. It's two separate clusters, divided by A1A, and which side you're already standing on decides your options more than what you're in the mood for.

On one side of that highway sits the golf campus: TPC Sawgrass, the Sawgrass Marriott's main hotel building, and Sawgrass Village, the shopping center that anchors most of the neighborhood's everyday eating. On the other side is the ocean. The Marriott runs a shuttle to its oceanfront Cabana Beach Club specifically because that building sits apart from the hotel, across the road, facing the Atlantic. Sawgrass Country Club's own beach club sits over there too. Two sides, two different dining personalities, connected by a strip of A1A that has its own small lineup of restaurants that don't belong to either cluster.

Most guides to this neighborhood skip that split entirely and just list everything within a mile as if it's one pool of options. It isn't, and knowing the difference changes how you plan a week of meals here.

West of A1A: The Golf Side, and a Renovation Story That's a Decade Old

Sawgrass Village opened in 1984 as the neighborhood's original shopping center, and it went through a full rebuild in 2014 and 2015 that replaced most of the original 1980s buildings. Aqua Grill, which had operated there since 1988, was part of that rebuild. The restaurant's owner told the Ponte Vedra Recorder in 2016 that the move into a new building next door had been underway for months, and that longtime patrons visiting for that year's Players Championship would be seeing the new space for the first time. That means the version of Aqua Grill sitting on the lake today, with its 200 seats split between the dining room, bar, and covered deck, has been open for roughly a decade.

That matters because you'll still find reviews describing Sawgrass Village as "under major renovation," construction dust and all. That description is stale. The rebuild finished years ago, and the restaurant lineup that emerged from it has had time to prove itself: Aqua Grill has taken Best of the Beaches for Seafood in both 2024 and 2025, along with the Ponte Vedra Recorder's Best Romantic Restaurant award both years and OpenTable's Diner's Choice recognition every year since 2017. That's not a business still finding its footing. That's a decade-old restaurant putting up current numbers.

The rest of the Village fills in around it. Nona Blue Modern Tavern and Metro Diner cover the casual end, the kind of place you land on a Tuesday without a reservation. Poppy's Italiano and Mulligan's Pub round out the weeknight rotation, and Restaurant Medure sits a short distance away for the nights that call for something more composed. If you golf at TPC Sawgrass or stay at the Marriott's main building, two more options sit right on the course: Nineteen, which runs a seasonal American and Continental menu with an 800-plus bottle wine list and a weekday happy hour from 4:30 to 6:30, and Vernon's, named for Vernon Kelly, who helped develop TPC Sawgrass alongside course architects Pete and Alice Dye and former PGA TOUR commissioner Deane Beman. Vernon's serves breakfast and small plates with a view of the resort's waterfall and the Stadium Course through floor-to-ceiling windows.

None of this is new. All of it is stable. That's the point.

East of A1A: The Ocean Side, Under New Ownership Since Last Fall

Cross A1A and the picture changes. This is the oceanfront half of Sawgrass, and the restaurant that anchors it has actually seen real change recently, just not the kind most people notice from the road.

The Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa and its Cabana Beach Club sold in November 2025 for $149.04 million to a company tied to South Street Partners, a private equity firm based in Charlotte and Charleston that also owns Kiawah Island's golf resort properties, Naples Grande Beach Resort, and PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens. That's a jump from the $122 million the same properties sold for back in 2014, and it puts the oceanfront half of Sawgrass in the hands of a group that specializes in exactly this kind of coastal golf resort.

The building at the center of that deal is the Cabana Beach Club, home to 1912 Ocean Bar & Rooftop, which opened to the public in 2023 as Ponte Vedra's first rooftop bar. The project had been planned since around 2020 but was delayed more than two years after Hurricane Irma damaged the original Cabana Club in 2017, which led to the old structure being torn down entirely. What replaced it is a 12,000 square foot building with three distinct spaces: the first-floor Sea Porch restaurant, private dining for members and resort guests that holds 184; the second-floor 1912 Ocean Bar & Rooftop, open to the public, holding 168; and the rooftop itself, which accommodates 144. Total capacity across the building runs to nearly 500 people, which tells you this isn't a casual bar bolted onto a hotel. It's a full events venue that happens to also serve dinner.

Sawgrass Country Club runs its own oceanfront beach club as well, with dining built around its private membership rather than public access. So the ocean side of Sawgrass actually splits again along a different line: 1912 Ocean Bar & Rooftop is open to anyone who wants a table, while the Country Club's beach club dining stays inside the membership.

For residents, the practical upshot is this. The village side has been settled and awards-tested for years. The ocean side just changed hands less than a year ago, under a new owner with a track record of running similar properties elsewhere on the coast. If dining on that side of Sawgrass feels a little different this season, that's less about the menu and more about who's now setting the direction for the whole building.

The Strip That Doesn't Pick a Side

A1A itself carries a handful of places that belong to neither cluster. JJ's Liberty Bistro has been serving French dishes in Ponte Vedra Beach since 1994, making it one of the longest-running restaurants in the area, full stop. Millie's Homemade Ice Cream & Coffee sits just a few minutes from the gate for the kind of stop that doesn't require deciding between golf side and ocean side at all. Pusser's Bar & Grille fills the same role for a casual dinner that's closer to home than either cluster.

These are the places locals default to on a weeknight when the drive across A1A feels like more commitment than the meal warrants.

Picking a Side, By Occasion

Reading the Neighborhood Correctly

The version of Sawgrass most content treats as a single dining scene is actually two, built around two different anchors, with a short stretch of A1A holding the neighborhood's oldest standbys in between. The Village side has had a decade to settle into its current form, and its recent award history backs that up. The ocean side is the one actually in motion right now, not because the restaurants changed, but because the group that owns the building behind them changed hands less than a year ago.

Knowing which side of that line you're on, and which side just changed ownership, is the kind of detail that only shows up if you're paying attention to this specific stretch of Ponte Vedra Beach rather than treating it as one more line item on a neighborhood list.
