Affordable Spring Break Activities

by JULIE LITTLE BREWER 03/11/2019

If you recently purchased a new home or are saving for a down payment on a new house, you might not have the funds to go all out this Spring Break. Not to worry. There are plentiful activities you can do with your kids to show them a good time without going on a family vacation. From free to affordable activities you can do something fun with your children in town and every day over Spring Break while staying within your budget. Here are some ideas to get you started.

  • Picnic in the park. Pack up a picnic lunch with all of your kid’s favorite snacks and treats and head to your favorite city park. Bring a Frisbee, soccer ball, hula hoops, Twister and other simple games and activity options and let them run around and enjoy the beautiful day outdoors.
  • Beach, lake or river. Head to your nearest body of water for a day of fun in the sun. Depending on where in the country you might reside, this might be the beach, a nearby lake or river, or even just a creek around the corner. You don't have to fly your children to a tropical climate to help them feel like they're on vacation. Bring beach toys or inner tubes to float in the water and maybe a kid's fishing pole or two. If you don't have a body of water near your home set up a kiddy pool or Slip ‘N Slide in your backyard to bring the vacation feel home.
  • Hiking adventure. Take your children out to the closest greenbelt or State Park for a hiking adventure. Play nature games and look for wildlife. Pretend you're in a fantasy universe or some other form of make-believe and go on a quest.
  • Zoos and wildlife parks. A trip to the local zoo or wildlife park is an affordable way to excite your kids and introduce them to new things. See the monkeys, lions, emus, snakes, and more!
  • Interactive children’s museums. In most cities, you can find a children's museum or interactive play zone with affordable entry fees. Take your children on an interactive and educational outing and let their minds wander and explore.

If you recently relocated to a new house, you can take time over Spring Break to help your children design their room or living space. Help them pick out their paint colors, visit discount stores for fun curtains and comforters and spend the time off school letting them design and develop their home environment. No matter where you reside, there are fun activities you can do to get the most out of Spring Break week without overextending your finances. Be excited about the events available to you and impart a sense of adventure at home to your children.
